$10K to Maui Youth Centers in “Selfie” Competition
By Wendy Osher
An estimated $10,000 was donated by Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company and East Maui Irrigation to youth groups on Maui as part of a “selfie” photo competition designed to promote safety.
Youth Centers on Maui utilized “Play Hard, Play Safe” signage as props in photo entries for the “Safety Selfie Competition.”
Winners included the following entrants:
- 1st Place: Pāʻia Youth Center, $4,000
- 2nd Place: Hāna Youth Center, $2,500
- 3rd Place: Kīhei Youth Center, $1,500
- 4th Place: Boys & Girls Club, $1,000
- Viewers Favorite: Pāʻia Youth & Cultural Center $1,000
“Every year HC&S and EMI donate money to the youth groups on Maui, but this year we decided to do something more fun, more hands on with them,” said the companies.
“The idea was for the youth centers on Maui to be educated on ditch and cane road safety while having fun.”
All photo entries were posted on the HC&S website for people to vote on, with more than 1,000 votes cast online and in person at the HC&S booth at the Maui Fair.
In addition to the monetary awards, winners were also presented with a canvas printed photo of their entry during a ceremony held on Friday, Nov. 15, at the Hui Noʻeau solarium.
