Kīhei Man Succumbs to Injuries from Moped Crash

A Kīhei man succumbed to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident reported last month in South Maui, police c0nfirmed today.

Nicholas Webb, 54, died on Monday, Nov. 18, of injuries sustained in a moped crash reported at 3:45 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25, on South Kihei Road, about a half-mile south of the Alanui Ke Aliʻi Drive intersection, police said.

According a preliminary police investigation, Webb lost control of the moped he was operating while traveling south on South Kīhei Road, crossed the center line, and collided into the front of a white 2002 Dodge pick-up that was traveling in the opposite direction.

The 36-year-old Haʻikū man driving the truck was uninjured in the collision, police said.

Webb was initially transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in serious condition, and eventually flown to Queen’s Medical Center on Oʻahu for further treatment.

Maui police say alcohol and speed remain under investigation, and report that the moped operator was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The incident was the 14th traffic fatality on Maui County roads this year compared to 20 at the same time last year.
