The state is proposing the development of an exploratory potable water well at the Maui Department of Water Supply Pukalani Tank Site on the Kula Highway.

The Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources, Engineering Division filed a Draft Environmental Assessment for the project with an Anticipated Finding of No Significant Impact.

In a summary report, the department explained that “the well is intended primarily to provide potable water for future State of Hawai‘i projects, including school projects for the Department of Education and residential developments of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands.”

According to the Draft EA, the state intends to enter into an agreement with the Maui Department of Water Supply to integrate the new water source into the existing county system and transfer ownership to the County of Maui.

Public comment on the Draft Environmental Assessment is being accepted through Feb. 7, 2014.
