According to police reports, Elf was crossing Piʻikea Avenue on foot when he was struck by a 2005 GMC truck traveling east at around 4:31 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014.

The truck, operated by a 56-year-old Kula man, then crossed left of the centerline, struck a chain link fence on the north side of the roadway, and came to rest in a vacant lot on the north side of Piʻikea Avenue, police said.

Police say the pedestrian suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Maui police Lt. William Juan said the pedestrian was not in a designated cross walk at the time of the incident.

The road was closed for about four hours while police conducted an investigation. The area was reopened to traffic at 8:33 a.m.

The involvement of speed and drugs and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is still pending, said Sgt. William Hankins in a police report.
