The MIL Championship canoe regatta is being moved from Ka Lae Pōhaku beach park in South Maui to the Kahului Harbor due to “unfavorable and potentially unsafe conditions,” contest organizers said.
The decision to move the race to Kahului was made this morning after receiving the necessary approvals for change in venue. The anticipated start time will likely be at 11 a.m., according to organizers.
Currently canoes and hundreds of paddlers are in motion from one side of the island going to the other.
The race was originally scheduled for Hanakaʻōʻō in Lahaina, but was moved to Ka Lae Pōhakuin Kīhei earlier in the week due to adverse ocean conditions. The latest change in venue to Kahului Harbor was made after assessing the ocean conditions this morning.

Due to predicted adverse ocean conditions, the Maui Interscholastic League season championship regatta scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 25, will be relocated.
The event was originally scheduled to take place at Hanakaʻōʻō in Lahaina, but will instead be held at Ka Lae Pōhaku beach park in Kīhei, according to MIL race directors and coordinators.
The event is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. with 10 high schools competing this season.
