UPDATE: Car of Missing Maui Woman Found at Peʻahi, “JAWS”

A search party of about 25 people departed from Haʻikū this morning bound for the Nāhiku area of East Maui as family members and friends look for 27-year-old Carly “Charli” Joann Scott who was last seen on Sunday night.

Scott is five months pregnant and has red shoulder length hair, green eyes, weighs 160 pounds, and stands 5-feet-10-inches tall. She was last seen on Sunday, Feb. 9, in a silver colored 1997 Toyota 4Runner with the Hawaiʻi plates MDE889, and a silver skull with LED eyes in the front grill.

“Panicked is the only word I can use to describe how I feel,” said Scott’s sister, Fiona Elyse McKenna Wais as she prepared to depart for Nāhiku as part of the organized search this morning.

According to Wais, Scott went to help her ex-boyfriend whose car had broken down and was stuck at around mile post 20 of the Hāna Highway on Sunday night.

Scott, who has not been seen since, was reported missing by her mother on Monday night. Scott’s dog, who was with her when she went missing, was found two days ago near the Nāhiku Market.

Family members say the search today is focused on mile marker 20 past Keʻanae and mile markers 27 to 29 in the Nāhiku area.

“She’s the most reliable person — everybody knows that,” said Wais of her sister, noting that Scott works two jobs — at the Hui Noʻeau Visual Arts Center and the Paragon Salon in Makawao.

According to Wais, Scott is usually in daily contact with family members and is “inseparable” from her younger sister.  “She would never not be in contact,” said Wais.

Family members say the Scott had some issues with her ex-boyfriend (who is the father of the unborn baby), but nothing that they know of that involved police. Despite parting ways, they remained in contact on occasion through text messaging, according to family members.

“She was exhausted and it was dark when she left,” said Wais. “I’m afraid she fell asleep at the wheel and is just waiting for someone to help,” said Wais who joined other family members last night in scouring the Hāna Highway for signs of Scott or her vehicle.

Search party member Alton Franco with Morey Inc. said his team volunteered to help in the search, which will include the use of a private helicopter tomorrow if necessary.

Others who were on hand today included trainers with Maui Dog Tags, who are assisting with ground tracking of the search area.

Maui police issued a missing person crime bulletin yesterday seeking information on Scott’s whereabouts.

Family members have also set up a Facebook page to assist in disseminating information on the search and updates regarding the case.
