No Tsunami Threat to Hawaiʻi After 6.9 California Earthquake

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi after a 7.0 preliminary magnitude earthquake reported off the coast of Northern California at 7:18 p.m. HST on Sunday, March 9, 2014.

The magnitude was later downgraded to a 6.9, according to updated information from the USGS.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a statement saying based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi.

The quake was centered 48 miles WNW of Ferndale, California; 50 miles W of Eureka, California; 53 miles WNW of Fortuna, California; 54 miles W of McKinleyville, California; and 247 miles NW of Sacramento, California.
