4.4 Los Angeles Quake, No Tsunami Threat to Hawaiʻi

There were no immediate advisories issued for Hawaiʻi following a 4.4 preliminary magnitude Los Angeles earthquake reported at 3:25 a.m. HST (6:25 a.m. Pacific Standard Time) on Monday, March 17, 2014.

The quake occurred at a depth of 9 km, and was centered: 6 miles NW of Beverly Hills; 7 miles W of Universal City; 7 miles N of Santa Monica, California; 7 miles WNW of West Hollywood; and 348 miles SSE of Sacramento, California, according to the US Geological Survey.

According to data compiled by the USGS, the quake was felt as far away as Alpine, located 137 miles away.  The agency recorded heavy response of individuals feeling the quake in Encino, Simi Valley and Santa Monica.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a statement relating to the event for Hawaiʻi or locations closer to the tremor.
