Maui Unemployment Rate Up Slightly to 5%

Maui County’s unemployment rate in January was 5%, up slightly from the adjusted 4.7% rate reported the month before, according to new data released by the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for individual islands within Maui County in January 2014 included: Maui Island, 5.0% (up from 4.5% from December 2013); Molokaʻi, 6.9% (down from 7.8%); and Lānaʻi, 3% (down from 4.8%), according to DLIR data.
Statewide, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.6% in January 2014, down from the 4.7% revised rate for December of 2013, the department reports. That’s below the 6.6% seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the nation for the same period.
Statewide, the department reports that there were 625,650 employed and 30,250 unemployed in January, for a total seasonally adjusted labor force of 655,900.
