Heavy Rains over Haleakalā Prompt Maui Flood Advisory

Flooding Prompts Road Closures:

Road closures in effect due to the current weather conditions include the following: Kula Highway at Thompson Rd.; Kula Highway near mile post 18.5 at Sun Yet Sen Park due to flooding; Piʻilani Hwy. (31) MP-16 area of Kaupō closed to visitors, but, open for area residence; and Piʻilani Hwy. (31) MP-39 area of Kaupō Ranch.

Maui Flood Advisory Extended to 3 a.m. 3/3o/14

A flood advisory for Maui has been extended to 3 a.m. on Sunday, March 30, 2014.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service say radar at 12:05 a.m. showed heavy rain had developed over the windward slopes and coast of Haleakalā from Keʻanae to Hāna and Kīpahulu, with no additional showers expected to move onshore.

Other locations in the advisory include: Nāhiku, Hāmoa, and Huelo.

Maui Flood Advisory Extended to 10:45 p.m. 3/29/14

A flood advisory for Maui has been extended to 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2014, but may need to be extended longer if heavy rain persists.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service say radar at 9:20 p.m. showed that rainfall had diminished over the Windward East Maui area; but the flood advisory remains in effect as ponding and runoff continues from heavy rains earlier in the evening.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service say radar at 7:42 p.m. showed persistent moderate to heavy rain over the windward and southeast slopes of Haleakalā, with additional shower moving ashore.

The advisory includes: Nāhiku, Keʻanae, Huelo, Hāna, and Kaupō.

The public is reminded to stay away from streams, drainage ditches, and low-lying areas that are prone to flooding.

Motorists and pedestrians are reminded not to cross fast flowing or rising water in their vehicle or on foot.

In addition to the flood advisory, there is also a flood watch in effect until 6 a.m. on Sunday, March 30; and a special weather statement issued for the entire state.

Maui Flood Advisory Extended to 8 p.m. 3/29/14

“The National Weather Service in Honolulu has continued the Flood Advisory for the Island of Maui, in effect until 8 p.m. This advisory may need to be extended if heavy rain persists.

At 4:48 p.m. radar showed heavy showers falling along windward slopes of east Maui, with the heaviest rainfall occurring near Hāna. Other locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Nāhiku, Paʻuwela, Pāʻia, Makawao, Huelo, Hoʻokipa Beach Park, Hāliʻimaile and Hāʻiku.”

Maui Flood Advisory to 5 p.m. 3/29/14

A flood advisory is in effect for Maui until 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2014, but may need to be extended longer if heavy rain persists.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service say radar at 2:48 p.m. showed heavy showers over the slopes of Haleakalā.

Other locations in the advisory include: Pukalani, Paʻuwela, Pāʻia, Makawao, Kīhei, Keʻanae, Huelo, Hāna, Hāmoa, ʻUlupalakua and Haʻikū.

Molokaʻi Flood Advisory to 2:30 p.m. 3/29/14

A Flood Advisory has been issued for the island of Molokaʻi until 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2014.

Forecasters from the National Weather Service say radar at around 11:21 a.m. showed heavy rain near Kaunakakai and Kamalo.  The rain was nearly stationary.  Other areas in the advisory include: Molokaʻi Airport, Maunaloa, Kualapuʻu, Kepuhi, Kalaupapa, Hoʻolehua, and Hālawa Valley.
