The Maui Family YMCA invites residents to attend its annual Healthy Kids Day 5K and Fun Run on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at its facility in Central Maui.

Event organizers say Healthy Kids Day is a national initiative to improve the well-being of kids by promoting healthy living and choices.

The family-friendly event is open to kids and their parents, and features “hours of fun, active play, and educational opportunities,” including a first-of-its-kind Kid’s Triathlon open to kids ages 5 to 12, a 5K, and a Fun Run.

The deadline to register for the Kid’s Triathlon is today, Friday, April 18; and the deadline to register for the event’s 5K and Fun Run is next Thursday, April 24.

The entry fee for the Kid’s Triathlon is $20, which includes lunch, an event T-shirt and a grab bag with prizes and giveaways. The entry fee for the 5K is $10, and the Fun Run is $5.

This year’s theme, “Build A Happier, Healthier Kid,” encourages kids and families to stay active, connected and healthy.

“At the Y, we know parents struggle to keep their kids physically and intellectually active every day, so we want to help ensure that fewer kids are at risk of childhood obesity and more kids excel in school,” said Mike Morris, Maui Family YMCA president and CEO in an organization press release. “YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day will get kids moving and learning, while also helping families get a jump on creating a healthier summer — and ultimately, a healthier future.”

Race day registration for the 5K and Fun Run begins at 7 a.m. in the YMCA Fitness Studio, with the Fun Run starting at 8 a.m., and the 5K starting immediately after. The Kid’s Triathlon will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude by 2 p.m.
