Wind Advisory Cancelled for Haleakalā and Kahoʻolawe

Forecasters with the National Weather Service say winds have dropped below advisory levels.

The wind advisory that was in effect for the Summit of Haleakalā on Maui, and Kahoʻolawe, have since been cancelled. 

Agency forecasters say the public should still remain cautious of diminishing winds.

Sustained winds of 20 to 35 mph and localized gusts over 50 mph are forecast for parts of Maui and Kahoʻolawe, according to an updated forecast issued by the National Weather Service.

The agency issued a wind advisory for Kahoʻolawe and the summit area of Haleakalā on Maui until noon on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, saying northeasterly winds are expected for the first half of the day.

“The stronger winds will occur on the upper windward slopes of Haleakalā including the Kaupō Gap area and will continue across all of Kahoʻolawe,” the NWS forecast stated.

As a precaution, the NWS advises motorist to use extra caution since winds this strong can bring down tree branches and make driving difficult for high profile vehicles.
