The Lānaʻi Community Health Center is the recipient of a half-a-million dollars in grant funds that will be used for the construction of a new facility.

The funding release was announced today by Governor Neil Abercrombie who shed light on the crucial role the center plays in serving the uninsured and under-insured citizens on Lānaʻi.

“Providing the necessary facilities in order to allow the health center to continue its mission will help eliminate barriers to health care services and raise the standard of living for many of our residents,” he said.

State officials say the Lānaʻi Community Health Center currently serves 1,190 patients, which is approximately 40% of the island’s estimated population of 3,100 residents.

“The people of Lana’i deserve a new center in a prime location to provide better access for those who need these types of necessary healthcare and dental services. With its larger design in a central location, more people in this remote area will receive care from top-notch professionals,” said State Senator J. Kalani English who helped to secure funding for the project.

Plans call for the construction of a facility at the heart of Lānaʻi City that is five times the size of the existing center .

State officials say the new health center will include nine exam rooms, compared to the current three at the current facility.

According to the governor, the new center will also feature a procedure room, dental x-ray, dental and general lab facilities, conference and general administrative office facilities, and a community activity room.

“The healthcare providers at LCHC have over the years showed their commitment to the people of Lana‘i. In fact, several of the Center’s doctors were named in Honolulu Magazine’s Best Doctors in Hawaiʻi list. I also applaud the Center’s officials and staff on the work they have done to see this new facility come to fruition,” said English who represents the district that includes Lānaʻi.

The non-profit Lānaʻi Community Health Center provides services to low-to-moderate income residents with a special emphasis on the uninsured and under-insured men, women, children and families who have few or no alternatives for affordable health care.
