A Kahului man suffered fatal injuries in a motorcycle accident reported just before 7 a.m. near the Kehalani subdivision in Wailuku.
Maui police have since identified the man as Joeffrey Bacay, 27 of Kahului.
The incident was reported at 6:58 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16 , 2014, on the Honoapiʻilani Highway (Hwy 30) at the Kehalani Parkway intersection.
According to police reports, Bacay was operating a Kawasaki motorcycle and was traveling in the Lahaina bound direction on the highway when he collided into a Hyundai, as the driver of the sedan was turning left from the highway onto Kehalani Parkway.
After colliding into the sedan, police say the motorcycle broke apart and also hit a Toyota sedan that was traveling toward Wailuku on the highway.
According to police reports, Bacay was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room where he was pronounced dead. Police say the driver of the Hyundai sedan, a 59-year-old Wailuku woman, suffered from minor injuries; and the driver of the Toyota sedan, a 43 year old Kīhei man, was not injured in the crash.
Police say both drivers were wearing their seat belts and that the airbag in the Hyundai deployed upon impact.
According to police reports, the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet.
Acting Traffic Division Sergeant Jonathan Kaneshiro filed an accident synopsis report saying the involvement of speed is suspected; however it remains under investigation.
