Body of California Man Recovered from Car in Kapalua Gulch

Maui police are investigating the discovery of a body found in a vehicle that had overturned in a gulch off of the Honoapiʻilani Highway, in the Kapalua/Nāpili area of West Maui.
Maui Police have since identified the victim as 19-year-old Martin Castro Jr. of Napa, California.
The incident was reported at 2:44 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, at a small bay just north of DT Fleming Beach.
Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said Nāpili fire fighters were dispatched to the scene and were directed by a resident to an area overlooking the bay.
According to department reports, firefighters confirmed a vehicle had flipped over and was found approximately 60 feet below in the shore break.
Department officials say two fire personnel and an ocean safety officer aboard a rescue watercraft were able to extricate the victim from the car.
Authorities say the male victim was transported to an area just north of the location and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A police investigation reveals the vehicle ran off the roadway, up an embankment, and off the cliff. Police say speed is suspected as a factor.
The incident was the 17th traffic fatality on Maui County raods compared to 11 at the same time last year.
