5 People Displaced by Haʻikū Structure Fire

Two adults and three children were displaced following a structure fire on Hahana Road in Haʻikū on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 20, 2014.

Firefighters from Pāʻia and Makawao were dispatched at 2:37 p.m., and arrived on scene to find the 20-foot by 20-foot structure on Hahana Road fully engulfed and destroyed by fire.  Crews made their way down the road into a gulch where the structure was located, official said.

Department officials say the fire caused $60,000 in damage to the structure and $50,000 in damage to the contents.

The cause of the fire has not been determined at this time.

Fire officials say the blaze was brought under control at 3:30 p.m., and crews remained on scene conducting overhaul operations into the afternoon.

The displaced individuals were being assisted by the American Red Cross.
