Rain Near ʻUlupalakua and Kaupō Prompts Flood Advisory

Heavy rain falling at rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour along the southeast slopes of Haleakalā has prompted forecasters with the National Weather Service to issue a flood advisory.

The agency issued the advisory on Monday afternoon, Oct. 6, 2014, saying radar at around 4 p.m. showed heavy rains falling in the ʻUlupalakua and Kaupō areas.

The flood advisory remains in effect until 6:45 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, 2014.

Just last night, a landslide was reported in the Kaupō area of the Piʻilani Highway.  That road condition has since been cleared, but forecasters advise those traveling in the remote area that they may encounter water flowing in previously dry gulches.

As a precaution, motorists and pedestrians are advised to stay away from streams and low-lying areas that are prone to flooding, and not to cross fast flowing or rising water in their vehicle or on foot.
