Day of the Dead Fiesta and Benefit for Imua, Nov. 1

Sangrita Grill + Cantina carries the spirit of Halloween into the weekend with a Day of the Dead Party and costume contest tonight (Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014) at The Fairway Shops in Kāʻanapali.

The event is a benefit for Imua Family Services, a Maui-based nonprofit organization that provides early child development and therapeutic services to children with developmental delays, special needs, and disabilities.

More than 3,000 community members on Maui and Lānaʻi receive support annually from Imua Family Services through its various programs.

The event is named after the Dia de los Muertos holiday that is strongly associated with Mexico, but celebrated throughout Latin America and other parts of the world.

Event organizers say the holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died.

The party runs from 6 p.m. to midnight, with costume contest judging starting at 9 p.m.  Party goers are encouraged to come dressed in creative costumes with bright colors and artistic designs.

The Day of the Dead party also features music by DJ Del Sol and happy hour specials throughout the evening.

Chef and owner Paris Nabavi said Sangrita’s intention is to serve fine food represented in a fun atmosphere, celebrating the culture and spirit of Mexico.

There’s no cover charge, and reservations are requested for parties of six or more by calling 662-6000.

The Halloween weekend celebration is just one of the many community events that Chef Nabavi is involved with.  Nabvi is also a partner with the Maui School Garden Network that sponsors organic seeds for school gardens throughout the county.  He is also a supporter of the “Grow Some Good” initiative that donates proceeds from Persian cooking classes held at his won outdoor kitchen.
