An estimated 1,424 gallons of wastewater overflowed from a manhole on Aleo Place in Kahului on Friday, Dec. 5, 2014.

The overflow was reported at 9 a.m., and was stopped by 10 a.m.

Officials with the County of Maui Department of Environmental Management say the incident was caused by a blockage of an unknown material in the mainline.

According to department reports, the water flowed along the roadway and into a French drain that does not connect to the ocean or any waterway.

Authorities say the blockage was cleared, the wastewater was pumped up, and the spill site was cleaned and disinfected.

The State Department of Health was also notified of the incident.
