A High Surf Advisory is posted through 4:00 a.m. Monday for the north and west facing shores of Moloka’i and the north shore of Maui. Surf from 10 to 15 feet is expected for the north exposures, while wave heights of 8 to 12 feet are expected for the west side of Moloka’i. Expect strong breaking waves, shore break and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.

Today, Monday, January 19, 2015

Today we should get partly cloudy skies in Maui County with a slight chance of showers in the afternoon. We also expect some haze due to the light and variable winds forecasted up to 15 mph (see UHSOEST vog model above). As you can see, the haze forecasted should not be as thick as what we experienced for much of last week. Weaker winds mean a land and sea breeze pattern is likely to set up. As the land heats up, sea breezes are expected to develop which may lead to afternoon cloud cover and possible isolated light showers. A bit warmer today with high temperatures forecasted to fall in the range of 83° to 88°.

Looking Ahead

Light and variable wind conditions will return by Monday night, while light trades continue elsewhere. All islands are expected to be under southerly wind flow by Thursday as a front approaches the island from the west. The front is slated to reach Kauai early Friday morning and move down the island chain all day Friday, reaching the Big Island early Saturday morning. Cooler drier weather may move in behind the front.
