The MACC Offers Weekend of Hula, Comedy and Broadway Pops

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center offers the an diverse array of entertainment, perfect for a rainy weekend.

On Saturday, Jan. 24, Hālau Kamaluokaleihulu: “E Kaulele Aʻe (‘To Take Flight’)” will take the stage at the Castle Theater at 6 p.m.

Under the direction of Kumu Hula Kahulu Maluo, Hālau Kamaluokaleihulu presents their first anniversary concert: “E Kaulele Aʻe (‘To Take Flight’).” The night provides a true celebration of new and upcoming performers and musicians, as each group “takes flight” on their new venture while perpetuating the Hawaiian culture.

The hālau will share the stage with 2014 Nā Hoku Hanohano “Female & Male Vocalists of the Year,” Hulu Lindsey and Kamaka Kukona, as well as the nominated most promising artists, Kaiholu, and the newest and most quickest moving music sensation, Hu‘ewa.

Tickets are $27.

Comedian, actor and writer/producer Nick Swardson, one of the most exciting artists today, will perform at the Castle Theater on Saturday, Jan. 24, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Swardson is well-known for his roles in  the hit film “Grown Ups” and its sequel, “Grown Ups 2.” In Happy Madison Productions, he became a fixture in the company, as a writer and producing projects like “Grandma’s Boy,” “Benchwarmers” and co-producing “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” with Adam Sandler and Kevin James.

More recently Nick has performed in movies such as “That’s My Boy,”  “Blades of Glory,” “30 Minutes or Less,” and “Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star,” which he wrote, acted, and produced.

Tickets are $20, $28, $38 advance and increase $5 the day-of-show.

By popular demand, Maui Pops will present an all-Broadway program on Sunday, Jan. 25, at 3 p.m. in the Castle Theater. This year features the music of Rodgers & Hammerstein, with many of the most loved and most familiar songs from “The King and I,” “South Pacific,” Showboat,” “The Sound of Music,” and more.

Music Director James Durham and the Maui Pops Orchestra welcome guest artists Christiane Noll and William Michals, who both have extensive Broadway credits and have performed with orchestras around the world.

This program will be uplifting, with the orchestra and chorus supporting these fabulous vocal artists.

Tickets are $15, $30, $40 and $50 (half-price for students 18 and under for $30 to $50 seats).
