Weekend Storm Results in 1,250 Gallon Waiehu Wastewater Spill

An estimated 1,250 gallons of wastewater overflowed on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, when strong winds knocked out power and caused an equipment failure at the Waiehu Pump Station, county officials said.

The overflow was reported at 8:40 a.m., and was stopped by 9:20 a.m., according to county reports.

Officials with the County of Maui Department of Environmental Management say the wastewater flowed from a manhole fronting the pump station on Akake Street, and flowed along the roadway into a storm drain.

County officials say the overflow did not reach the ocean, as the storm drain was completely blocked with sand.

The spill site was disinfected and the State Department of Health was notified.
