Solid Waste Woes: Mechanical Problems in Haʻikū, Staff Shortage in Hāna

Mechanical problems resulted in missed refuse collection in Haʻikū on Tuesday, March 10; and a staffing shortage in East Maui will result in the partial closure of Hāna Landfill on Wednesday, March 11, 2015.

The County of Maui Department of Environmental Management, Solid Waste Division, announced that due to a mechanical problems, a residential refuse collection route in the Haʻikū area was not picked up on Tuesday, March 10, 2015.  Trash along the affected route is expected to be picked up on Wednesday, March 11, instead.

Affected areas include: Haʻikū, Holokai, Kauhikoa, Kaupakalua, Peʻahi, Ulumalu, and East and West Kuiaha Roads; as well as Luahine and Nanihōkū Place.

Additionally, due to insufficient staffing levels, the Hāna Landfill will close at 1 p.m. on March 11, 2015.  County officials say the closure is necessary for the department to ensure safe operations and meet the minimum state Department of Health operating requirements of the County’s solid waste permit.
