Lumeria Maui, a holistic educational and well-being retreat located at the gateway to Upcountry Maui, has announced that Douglas Drummond has been selected as general manager. Drummond, formerly the US regional manager for The Cowshed Spa at SoHo House, comes to Lumeria Maui after establishing personal and professional practice in well-being and spirituality.
“Douglas provides the leadership ability Lumeria needs, while embodying and truly living the holistic, well-being-focused lifestyle the property strives to provide visitors,” said Ingrid Summerfield, Filament’s president and Lumeria’s managing partner. “Douglas has the managerial experience, teaching skills and a passion for personal growth and transformation that will create unique and meaningful experiences at Lumeria.”
Drummond began his journey into spiritual and personal growth long before stepping into the industry. Raised in New Zealand, he was heavily influenced by his family’s Maori tradition. Beginning as a teenager, he was encouraged to explore holistic well-being through meditation and yoga. His interest in fostering his own spiritual and mental growth coupled with a desire to interact with and assist others in these respects led him to Cornell University. He graduated in 2005 from the prestigious School of Hotel Administration with a focus in spa and destination operations.
Drummond studied under world-renowned instructors, including yogi Mark Whitwell and Gabrielle Roth in her 5Rhythms moving meditation practice. Drummond engages their teachings on nutrition, physical practice and spiritual mindfulness in his daily life. His passion for these practices led him to become a teacher of both with his partner, Lucia Horan.
Drummond considers himself a student of Hawaiian culture–specifically Maui culture–and emphasizes the importance of well-rounded educational programs and local engagement as crucial to the experience.
Lumeria Maui’s new ownership is committed to engaging and activating the local culture by establishing inclusive educational programs and building connections with the community, while offering the same experience to Lumeria’s visitors.
Drummond and Summerfield have overseen the growth of relationships between Lumeria and numerous Maui organizations and cultural groups, including hosting a variety of classes and workshops for Maui youth organizations and as well as meets for local leadership, meditation and spiritual groups.
Lumeria is actively growing its weekly educational program to offer visitors more experiences and teachings rooted in the spiritual and healing practices that play a significant role in the culture and history of Maui and Hawaiʻi.
Douglas is looking forward to using Lumeria as a platform to celebrate Hawaiian heritage and promote Maui and specifically the North Shore community: “My Maori connection through Ngai Tahu imparted a deep sense of respect and dedication to indigenous cultures and native tradition. I am inspired by the natural landscape of Maui, its people, and its heritage,” says Douglas. “We have some amazing plans in the near future for better defining Lumeria as a place which regards the people of Maui and their culture and land in reverence, and we cannot wait to share this experience at Lumeria.”
