Seven post offices in Maui County will offer late collection of mail on federal Tax Day, Wednesday, April 15, 2015, to accommodate last minute filers of tax returns.

Maui County post offices that are offering late collection include those in: Kahului, Kīhei, Lahaina (main), Makawao, Wailuku, Kaunakakai, and Lānaʻi City.

The late collection will be from specially marked collection boxes only.  The locations will have blue collection boxes or in-wall mail slots labeled with special bright orange signs indicating that they are a “Tax Mail Drop” for “Final Pick-Up” until midnight.

Tax forms with correct postage deposited in those specially designated boxes and slots by midnight will receive an April 15th postmark.  Post offices will still close at their regular times, so individuals utilizing the special drop boxes are are advised to ensure they have proper postage.

Mail dropped in non-designated slots and regular collection boxes will be collected at their regular posted times.

Postal officials say that, “due to the declining numbers of citizens who submit hard-copy tax returns by mail, the Postal Service no longer provides curbside service to last-second filers of tax mail at its drive-by collection boxes.”

The postal service cited the IRS in noting that as of March 20th, 90% of tax returns across the nation have been filed online so far this year.
