Report: Hawaiʻi Ranks 16th in Middle Market Firms

According to the first-ever Middle Market Power Index from American Express and Dun & Bradstreet, Hawaiʻi has an estimated 518 middle market firms, which make up nearly .82% of overall businesses.
The report uses Dun & Bradstreet’s proprietary databases of commercially active US firms to analyze the characteristics and economic impact of middle market enterprises. Middle market enterprises are defined as businesses generating between $10 million and $1 billion in revenues.
Nationally, there are more than 136,000 middle market firms. The firms employ an average of 368 workers and generate $45.1 million per firm per year.
Hawaiʻi ranks 16 out of all 50 states for the share of firms in the middle market.
This first in a series of reports finds that while the middle market makes up less than 1% of US businesses (.7%), they contribute slightly more than one in five dollars (21%) of US business revenues and employ over one in four workers (28%) in the private sector.
