Inaugural “Da Taste of Keokea” Seeks Participating Chefs

The first ever “Da Taste of Keokea” will be held on Saturday, May 16.

Local chefs and cooks have until this Monday, until May 4, to sign up and join the dozen-plus already enlisted to feature their culinary creations at the event.

Held at the Keokea Marketplace (at the 17 Mile Marker of Kula Highway) from 1 to 6 p.m., the event has an admission fee of $1 and attendees can buy plates of the various foods being sold.

The menu to date features:

  • kalua pork with watercress
  • pa‘i ‘ai chicharron
  • poke
  • chow fun
  • pastele stew
  • Vietnamese hot noodle dish
  • pho
  • salads
  • roast turkey
  • cheeseburgers
  • french fries

Those with a sweet tooth may also appreciate

  • banana bread
  • Kahakuloa rice pudding
  • root beer floats
  • iced mamaki

Daylong Entertainment presents, in order, Uncle Thomas Bucauto, Upcountry guitarist/vocalist; Jah Riddims; Miss Keiki Hula 2014 Keaolani Hosino of Halau Kekuaokala‘au‘ala‘iliahi, whose kumu hula are ‘Iliahi and Haunani Paredes; Mossman dancers of Kula-based halau Na Lei Kaumaka O Uka, whose kumu is Napua Nakasone; and Keokea recording artist Richard Dancil.

Event organizers promote zero waste and “urge diners optionally to bring their own reusable plates, bowls, cups and silverware.”

Beach chairs, mats, and warm clothing such as sweaters and jackets are also recommended.

Proceeds from the event benefit the nonprofit Keokea Homestead Farm Lots Association, an IRS 501(c](3) nonprofit representing Maui’s only agricultural homestead. It encompasses 65 two-acre lots dedicated to sustainable, subsistence farming.

The Keokea association also holds an open market from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. the second Sunday of each month, except in May and August.
