Fire Burns Half Acre of Brush Near Haʻikū Shed

A brush fire burned an estimated half-acre of pasture land near the top of Honopou Road in Haʻikū before being brought under control on Thursday afternoon.
The incident was reported at 4:47 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2015, when emergency dispatchers received multiple calls from area residents who reported heavy smoke and flames seen.
Fire crews from Pāʻia arrived on scene at 5:06 p.m. to find a field of light grass and ferns burning about 150 feet from a shed, said Maui Fire Services Officer Edward Taomoto.
With the help of Makawao firefighters and a water tanker crew from Kahului, the blaze was contained and extinguished shortly after 6 p.m.
The cause of the fire is undetermined.
