Interns Sought for Hyatt Regency LED Installation

The Sustainable Living Institute of Maui, in partnership with Green Building Hawai‘i, are seeking intern candidates interested in helping the Hyatt Regency Maui’s engineering team install LED lighting throughout their facility.

University of Hawai‘i Maui College students and community members alike are encouraged to apply.

The Hyatt Regency is in the process of retrofitting its entire facility—close to 18,000 lamps—from mostly fluorescent lighting to 100% LED lighting.

This internship pays $10 per hour and will serve as a great opportunity to work with one of the most progressive engineering teams in the resort industry on Maui.

Hyatt Regency, the first LEED Operations & Maintenance-certified resort facility in the state, has been continually upgrading equipment and facilities to increase sustainability through energy efficiency, water conservation and waste management. This internship will also be a great opportunity to work with a professional engineering team on an implementation project with a sustainability goal of energy reduction.

The internship will be managed by Green Building Hawai‘i and supervised by Austin Van Heusen, is an experienced internship coordinator and energy efficiency consultant.

Senior Engineer Gary Bulson will oversee the entire lighting retrofit.

Interns will have the opportunity to work with the engineering team throughout the project, two to three days a week between eight and 10 hours a day, depending on intern availability.

The duration of the internship will be determined by the number of interns available and the number of hours they are able to work.  Once interns have reached the hours needed for credit, they may be presented with the opportunity to continue with the project until completion.

Licensed electricians will install the wiring for the lighting equipment. The interns will be responsible for working in an organized fashion to install different LED lighting technologies in different areas of the facility as they become vacant and available for the lighting retrofit.

The project will require detailed knowledge of lighting technologies, as well as lighting terminology.

A one-day training program will familiarize the interns with the equipment, lighting terminology and how different lamps will be installed, as well as all safety procedures involved with the program.

• Understanding of basic lighting design and terminology
• Organization and project management of lighting installation
• Hands on work with professional engineering team
• Experience working with a luxury resort
• Safety procedures while working on construction/retrofit sites
• Understanding of different LED technology and their applications
