Members of the Maui Police Department’s 81st Recruit Class graduated today (Friday, July 24, 2015) in a ceremony at the King Kamehameha Golf in Waikapū.

The recruits went through eight months of physical and academic requirements as part of their training.

The twenty newly sworn-in members will now be assigned to the Field Training Officer Program in the coming months.

The Maui police department’s newest members include: Vavi Domingo; Keola McKee; Michael Santos; Joyce Skinner; Ashley Gandauli; Keola Wilhelm; Chase Bell; Lehua Souza; Joseph Alvarez; John Joaquin; Derek Campanelli; Trenton Aurello; William Cleghorn II; Justin Box; Stephan Evangelista; Erik Matsuo; Devion Johnson; Vance Vickers; Michael Ryan; and Andrew Spring.

The department’s Outstanding Recruit Award went to Officer Chase Bell for presenting the most consistent achievement in the areas of training, leadership, judgement, attitude and service to others.

Other awards included the following:

• Scholastic Achievement Award – Officer Erik Matsuo: Presented to the most astute recruit for achieving and maintaining the highest academic grade point average. This included study in criminal law, first responder training, CPR, and motor vehicle accident investigations.
• Neil T. Endo Firearms Award – Officer Derek Campanelli: The award was presented to the most accurate marksman, achieving the highest score during firearms training to include the final written exam, physical shot gun, and a rifle course.
• M. Cecil “Rusty” Dickson Award for Physical Fitness – Officer Chase Bell: The award went to the most physically fit recruit, demonstrating overall superiority in arrest, defense and tactics as well as physical training.
• Best Notebook Award – Officer Vavi Domingo: For content, organization and completeness and neatness.
• Sensei Shinichi Suzuki Award – Officer Keola McKee: For outstanding performance in Arrest and Defense Tactics.
