Haleakalā National Park on Maui will reopen its Wilderness Backcountry area for camping and cabin use on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015.

The area is currently closed as a precautionary measure due to Tropical Storm Guillermo.  Based on updated forecasts, park officials said they plan to reopen the area tomorrow and will be issuing cabin and camping permits starting tomorrow morning.

Although Guillermo has tracked away from Maui, representatives say the park may experience lingering effects from the storm, including high winds, clouds, flooding, and heavy rains.

Park visitors should be prepared for these conditions in the Summit and Kīpahulu Districts and in the Wilderness backcountry areas until the storm passes.
