No Tsunami Threat to Hawaiʻi After Large Peru Quake

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi following a preliminary magnitude 6.9 (7.5M according to preliminary data released by the USGS) earthquake reported at 12:46 p.m. HST on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015 in the border region of Peru and Brazil.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a statement saying that based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-Wide tsunami is not expected, and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi.

The USGS reports the earthquake was centered:

• 107 miles WNW of Iberia, Peru;
• 152 miles WNW of Cobija, Bolivia;
• 153 miles W of Brasileia, Brazil;
• 167 miles S of Tarauaca, Brazil; and
• 423 miles ENE of Lima, Peru.
