A Family Business Gives Back to Maui and More

Two items worth spending a few bucks on?

    Those purchases will help keep you comfortable both day and night, according to Elana Stone, Vice-President of Marketing and Spokeswoman for BedMart.  She can give you the lowdown on why a good bed is such a big deal.

 “A mattress is really critical to helping you live an active, healthy lifestyle,” explains Stone, adding that we spend 1/3rd of our lives in bed.  “To have the proper support, the proper spinal alignment, these are all things you should take into consideration when purchasing a mattress, so that you can live the best life during the day.”

Many local families got the gift of a quality mattress in May, when BedMart donated 50 TempurPedic mattresses to Maui Family Support Services, a nonprofit agency that’s been supporting early childhood development for 34 straight years.  Stone was there when around 45 families showed up to pick up their brand-new beds.

“That was the best part, is seeing the families and faces of everybody who gets to have a new good night’s sleep,” says Stone.

Oregon-based BedMart has been a family-owned business since it began in 1992.  Stone should know; she was there, as a kid.

“In order to hang out with my dad, I’d hang out in mattress warehouses, climb the racks and sweep the warehouse floor,” she smiles.  “So now, after going to school and working in a couple marketing agencies, I was able to come back to the family business and have a more professional position in the company than ‘mattress climber.’  It’s been a lot of fun; I work with my family, we work with our friends, we are all a big ʻohana.”

It’s an ʻohana that’s expanded, with 30 stores in Oregon, Washington and Hawaiʻi.  The Kahului location opened in March as the first BedMart in our state.  In May, a store was welcomed in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, and came with yet another gift of 50 mattresses to community groups there.  A Hilo branch will open its doors in a few weeks, around mid-January 2016, with more donations likely to come.
