Twenty-six schools from across the state will compete in this weekend’s 15th Annual First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Canoe Paddling State Championships, being held at Keʻehi Lagoon on Oʻahu.

The state event gets underway with an opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m. followed by preliminary heats at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016.

State representatives with the Hawaiʻi High School Athletic Association say competitors can finish the 1/2 mile course in under four minutes, depending on the division, weather and course conditions.

The Kamehameha Schools‐Kapālama campus holds the greatest amount of state titles at 17 including 6 boys, 7 girls and 4 mixed titles.  Punahou is the defending state champion and is recognized for sweeping the 2015 event on Maui in all divisions.

According to state records, the Maui Interscholastic League’s Kamehameha Maui boys team took the boy’s title in 2009 at Hanakaʻōʻō Beach in West Maui.  Maui’s Seabury Hall took the girl’s title in 2013 at Keʻehi Lagoon on Oʻahu.

Other Maui titles included mixed-crew wins for Kamehameha Maui in 2006, Kekaulike in 2004 and Lahainaluna in 2002.

The state regatta will be broadcast on OC16 on a delayed broadcast on the XCast TV Network – digital cable channels 1020‐1022 and online.  The broadcast begins Saturday, Feb. 6, 7 p.m. with the semifinal heats of all three classifications – girls, boys and mixed – followed by the championship finals.

The HHSAA notes that Hawaiʻi is currently the only state to offer outrigger canoe paddling as an official competitive sport. State championship races have been sanctioned by the organization since 2002.  Prior to that, individual high school organizations have featured the sport for decades.
