Maui Police Promote Five to Sergeant

The Maui Police Department announced the promotion of five officers to the rank of Sergeant. The promotions include: Dawn Danley, Masa Kaya, John Surina, Matthew Bigoss, and Eric Losvar. All promotions took effect on Feb. 1, 2016.

Dawn Danley began her career with the Maui Police Department in May 1999. After graduating from the academy as the president of the 53rd Recruit Class, she worked in Wailuku Patrol before transferring to Hāna Patrol. Following her one-year assignment in Hāna, she returned back to Wailuku Patrol for the next six years. In November 2007, she was transferred to the Traffic Division where she is currently assigned as a Vehicle Homicide Investigator. During her tenure with MPD, she has been involved in Recruit Training as an instructor with Motor Vehicle Accident Report, Citations, Laser, and OUI units.

Masa Kaya is a 13-year veteran of the Maui Police Department. He has served in the Wailuku and Kīhei Patrol Districts. While in patrol Kaya had been a Field Training Officer until being assigned to the Investigative Services Bureau in 2010. In 2011 Kaya was assigned to the Office of the Chief of Police.

John Surina began his career with the Maui Police Department in December of 2003. After graduating from the Police Recruit Academy, Surina was assigned to the Wailuku Patrol Division where he was a Field Training Officer and a member of the Special Response Team. In 2012 Surina was promoted into the Crime Reduction Unit. Prior to joining MPD Surina graduated from UC Davis in 2000.

Matthew Bigoss is an 11-year police veteran with the Maui Police Department. He has served in assignments with the Lahaina Patrol Division, Crime Reduction Unit, Special Response Team, and the Vice Division.

Erik Losvar, is a 10-year police veteran. He began his career with the Maui Police Department in 2005 as a member of the 65th Recruit Class. After graduating from the Police Recruit Academy, he worked in the Kīhei, Lahaina and Lānaʻi Patrol Divisions as a Patrol Officer. During his career, Losvar has received the Silver and Gold Medals of Valor for actions performed during the course of police work. Losvar has been a member of the Maui Special Response Team since 2012. While in patrol, Losvar had been a Field Training Officer until being assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division as a Domestic Violence Investigator in 2014. Losvar has assisted in training Arrest Defense Tactics, Officer Safety and Domestic Violence.
