A kite surfer, found face down in waters off of Kanahā, was pulled unresponsive from the ocean on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 11, 2016.

Fire officials say fellow kite surfers called for help and a passing kite surfer stopped to assist ocean safety officers with bringing the victim to shore.

According to department reports, the man was found in the white water of the surf zone, about 400 yards outside of the Kahului Wastewater Treatment Plant at around 3:51 p.m.

Firefighters and paramedics initiated CPR on the victim, but authorities say despite life-saving efforts, the man could not be revived and died at the scene.

After notification of next of kin, the victim was identified as Allen J. Chung, 47, of San Francisco, California.  Cause of death is pending autopsy results

Kahului firefighters and ocean safety personnel from Kanahā Beach Park responded to the incident.
