Guys and Dolls at the Historic ʻĪao Theater, March 4-20

Maui OnStage presents the romantic comedy, “Guys and Dolls” at the Historic ʻĪao Theater on select days from March 4-20, 2016.

Frank Loesser’s 1950 Pulitzer Prize-winning and Tony Award-winner for Best Musical, “Guys and Dolls” is based on the short stories by American author Damon Runyon, including “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown,” “Blood Pressure,” and “Pick the Winner.”

According to Maui OnStage, the Broadway classic tells of New York’s most infamous crap game organizer, Nathan Detroit (Francis Tau’a), hoping for a big pay day, challenges notorious gambler Sky Masterson (David Tuttle) to a bet he’s sure he’ll win – take holy roller Sister Sarah Brown (Leighanna Locke) to dinner in Havana, Cuba.

According to the story line, Sky accepts and pursues the known prude, seemingly hopelessly, while Nathan deals with his own situations – his 14-year fiancee, Adelaide (Brett Maryann Wulfson), who’s tired of waiting for a wedding while pursuing a location for “the oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York.” Maui OnStage notes that, “when gambling and love seem at odds, the characters are called to question their priorities to make things right.”

“Guys and Dolls,” with a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows features music and lyrics by Loesser including favorites such as “Fugue For Tin Horns,” “Bushel and a Peck,” “Take Back Your Mink,” Adelaide’s Lament” and “Luck Be A Lady.”

The Maui production is directed by Philadelphia-based guest director and choreographer Adrienne Maitland, with musical direction by Stephen Haines.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays, March 4 through 20 at the Historic ʻĪao Theater.
