In the last four years the Baldwin High School boys and the Seabury Hall girls have combined for three state championships and four runner-up finishes.

The two schools have dominated the Maui Interscholastic League track and field schedule over that same time span and come into this weekend’s Victorino Ohana Invitational as division favorites.

The two-day Victorino meet, hosted by St. Anthony High School, begins with trials today at 4 p.m. at the Yamamoto Track & Field Facility. Finals are set for Saturday, beginning with the discus and field events at 4 p.m., while the girls 100 hurdles, slated for 5 p.m., is the meet’s first running event.

Baldwin and Seabury are the defending champions of the Victorino Invitational, formerly the Trojans Blue & Gold Meet, which is the last MIL varsity scoring meet until the MIL championships, April 22-23.

The Baldwin boys could eclipse the 200-point barrier on Saturday. The team scored 197 points at the Yamamoto Invitational two weeks ago and 187 points at last year’s Victorino meet.

Baldwin's Kacy-Lyn Navarro won four events last week and the Kamakea Meet. She was named the meet's top female field performer for his wins in the long jump and triple jump. But she also won the girls 100 and 300 hurdles. Photo by Rodney S. Yap.

The girls race is not as lopsided, as Baldwin’s girls are expected to challenge Seabury Hall’s all-underclassmen team, led by junior workhorse Ava Shipman, who remains undefeated in the 800, 1500 and 3000 in the MIL. Meanwhile, the Lady Bears are led by Kaitlin Smith and Kacy-Lyn Navarro, two of the MIL’s best hurdlers and jumpers.

Smith did not compete last week because of a nagging quad injury and is expected to see limited action, if any, this week. Navarro on the other hand is coming off a four-event win performance at last week’s Kamakea Track Meet, where she was named top female field performer for her wins in the long jump (16-0 1/4) and triple jump (33-5 1/2). She also won the 100 hurdles (16.31) and 300 hurdles (50.19).

Navarro’s four events are the same four events that Smith is among the state leaders in. In fact, the only girls meet record in jeopardy at the Victorino meet is the 100 hurdles record Smith set last year in 15.36 seconds. She has already run 15.16 twice this season.

Shipman was named the top female runner at the Kamakea Meet for winning the 1,500, 3,000 and anchoring the Spartans’ winning 4×400 relay.

Baldwin’s La’akea Kahoohanohano-Davis has been rewriting records in the jumps all season, dominating his specialties again last week at the Kamakea Meet, where he was named the top male field performer.

Kahoohanohano-Davis competed in four individual events and set a new meet record in all four events, starting with his own mark of 22 feet 4 1/2 inches in the long jump from last year. The new record is now 22-11 1/4. He later broke broke the triple jump record of 44-4 set by Lahainaluna’s Bryson Williams in 2009 with a new mark of 46-2 1/4.

He opened the boys running events by breaking the 110-meter high hurdle record of 14.87, set by Baldwin’s Colten Quinabo in 2007, by .01 tenth of a second in 14.86. Kahoohanohano-Davis swept all three jumping events for the second week in a row when he won the high jump in 6-4, breaking the previous record of 6-3 set by St. Anthony’s Mark Thayer in 2011.

To cap off his night, Kahoohanohano-Davis ran the first leg of Baldwin’s winning 4×100 relay (44.73).

Had the Kamakea Meet been a scoring meet, the Baldwin athlete would have accounted for 42.5 points by himself — a maximum for an individual athlete in the MIL, which allows participants to compete in a maximum of four individual events and one relay.

At the state meet participants are allowed to compete in six individual events.

Kahoohanohano-Davis owns the Victorino high jump record at 6-6, and has already cleared a state’s best 6-7 3/4 this year. Based on his efforts this year, he should shatter both the long jump record of 22-3 and triple jump record of 46-1 at this weekend’s Victorino Invitational.

Baldwin’s Bailey Kaopuiki was awarded the top male runner award at the Kamakea Meet for winning the 100, 200 and anchoring his team’s winning 4×100 relay.

The only other meet record to fall from the Kamakea Meet was the boys 300 hurdles. Lahainaluna’s Kamal Golaube set a new mark of 40.60, breaking the previous best time of 41.13 set by Baldwin’s Tyler Feiteira in 2013.
