Strong winds forced the closure of the Molokaʻi Landfill on Wednesday, April 6, 2016.

Workers reportedly said the windy conditions have caused safety concerns for the public and employees at the landfill.

Weather permitting, the Molokaʻi Landfill should reopen at 8 a.m. on Thursday, April 7.

Department officials apologized for the inconvenience saying they appreciate the community’s understanding and cooperation.

The National Weather Service expanded a wind advisory this morning to include Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe and Maui, in effect until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, 2016.  Strong high pressure building well north of Kauai and a stalled front over the Big Island will result in windy northeasterly trade winds across portions of Maui County.  Forecasters anticipate northeast winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph on Maui.

A special weather statement that also included the island of Molokai indicated that gusty northeast trade winds are expected.
