A former teacher and head football coach at Maui High School, David Bui, pleaded no contest today to five counts of indecent electronic display to a child.

The criminal case surfaced last year when Bui was arrested by detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division’s Sex Assault Unit on Feb. 12, 2015, for allegations of attempted sex assault involving explicit text messages with a female high school student, according to Maui police.

Two days prior, Bui announced his plans to quit coaching for the Sabers in favor of coaching for his son’s Little League baseball team.

Following the arrest police said Bui was released pending further investigation.

Maui Now has confirmed with the Department of Education that Bui is no longer employed with the department, but they couldn’t say how long ago the departure happened or the circumstances surrounding the departure.

Sentencing is set for Thursday, July 14, 2016.  A request was made for a presentence investigation to determine if there are any extenuating circumstances or history that could impact the extent of the sentence.
