A Kīhei man suffered critical injuries in an evening crash on the Haleakalā Highway on Monday, May 23, 2016. Authorities say the 21-year-old man had to be extricated from the vehicle and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.

The incident was reported at 8:19 p.m. on Haleakalā Highway just above Firebreak Road in Kahului.

Upon investigation it was determined that a vehicle was traveling north down Haleakalā Highway when the driver lost control and crossed over the undivided center median and collided into another vehicle which was headed in the opposite direction, up Haleakalā Highway. The north bound vehicle then continued on and collided into two other vehicles that were also traveling up Haleakalā Highway.

As a result, a 21 year old man from Kīhei was extricated from one of the vehicles by Fire Department personnel and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition. Injuries of others involved in the accident were minor. Police say the only other person transported to the hospital was a minor who was transported in good condition.
