On Saturday May 28, 2016, at 2:55 a.m., firefighters responded to a brush fire reported near homes on Kaiwahine Street in north Kihei.

Kihei firefighters arrived at the end of Kaiwahine Street at 3:10 a.m. and found a vehicle and brush on fire in an open field south of Hale Piilani Park.

Engine 6 and Tanker 14 from Wailea had the fire under control by 3:28 a.m. and called it extinguished at 4:48 a.m.

A resident on Hoalike Street called it in after being awakened by small explosions and seeing the fire in the grassy field.

The fire never got closer than 150 feet from the nearest home.

Investigation found that an abandoned vehicle was likely set on fire and the flames spread to the brush nearby, charring just over one acre. There were no injuries and no homes were in immediate danger.
