Habitat for Humanity Receives $100,000 Grant

Habitat for Humanity Maui will receive $100,000 of Habitat for Humanity International’s $6.6 million grant to fund critical positions and partner with more families who need decent and affordable places to live.

Habitat for Humanity International is distributing the grant nationwide to 30 Habitat locations to support affordable housing and community development. Three Hawai‘i affiliates received funding for various positions.

Habitat for Humanity Maui is using its portion of the grant to fund a family services manager.

The position has been filled by Sophie Lee, who comes to Habitat with experience in social service and education.

She will enable Habitat to continue to offer free homeownership classes, which help individuals and families prepare themselves and is a requirement for every family applying for assistance with Habitat.

“We’re grateful that this grant allows us to increase our impact in the Maui community,” said Sherri K. Dodson, HFH Maui executive director. “Our work is vital to helping families achieve strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.”

The funding comes from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grant is awarded under HUD’s Section 4 Capacity Building for Community Development and Affordable Housing Program, which helps fund critical positions at Habitat offices, allowing them to expand their work in the local community.

Since 1998, Habitat for Humanity International has received over $85 million in Section 4 HUD grants, which has benefitted nearly 590 Habitat locations nationwide.
