Hawaiian Homestead Meetings on Maui This Week
Hawaiian Community Assets and the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation collaborate to present a series of three Maui workshops this week. The meetings cover Hawaiian homesteader issues and rights, particularly concerning lease cancellation and foreclosure.
Waiohuli undivided-interest lessees will be interested in planned topics of homestead-financing options and the 1920 federal Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, because these 280 lessees will have lot selection for the first 47 half-acre Upcountry parcels in mid-2017.
The Maui series begins tonight at the Paukukalo Community Center, with additional meetings on Tuesday at the Lahaina Civic Center, and on Wednesday at the Keokea Park Pavilion. All informational sessions are free and begin at 6 p.m.
RSVP at phone (808) 587-7655 or email [email protected].
The co-sponsoring nonprofit Hawaiian Community Assets is a HUD-approved housing-counseling agency and community-lending institution that builds the capacity of low- and moderate-income communities to achieve and sustain economic self-sufficiency with a particular focus on Native Hawaiians.
The Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation seeks to perpetuate, through legal and other advocacy, the rights, customs and practices that strengthen Native Hawaiian identity and culture. The agency carries out this mission by integrating native values into the practice of western law and jurisprudence.
