Matagi Trio to Headline Hawaiian Music Concert in Lahaina

New recording artists and seasoned performers, Matagi Trio, will perform at Lahaina Restoration Foundation’s free Hawaiian Music Series concert on Thursday, Aug. 25 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Baldwin Home Museum on the corner of Dickenson and Front Streets in Lahaina.

Meaning “wind” in Samoan, Matagi is also the name of a trio of Maui musicians:  Marvin Tevaga, Kalani Miles and Kimo Brehm.

They have performed together for years at venues throughout the island, with a variety of musical genres while sharing vocal harmonies and rhythms.  The trio is recording a debut album and has currently released a single, “Valley Isle,” which refers to leaving their island home but knowing that home will always be Maui.

“Like the wind is ever changing, so is our performance as you listen to songs from old, new, traditional and contemporary Hawaiian, reggae and so on,” said Marvin.

Tevaga’s love for music began at the young age of eight when he picked up the ‘ukulele for the first time. He has been perfecting his talent and performing ever since.

As a Samoan growing up in Hawai‘i with many diverse cultures, he has come to appreciate various genres of music and redefines songs in his own style. Marvin regularly entertains as a wedding musician.

Also Samoan, Kalani Miles is an accomplished guitarist who enjoys performing for couples during their wedding ceremonies. Maui native Kimo Brehm, a bass guitarist, performs at island weddings and baby lūʻau.
