Criminal Investigation Launched into Arson at Senator’s Home

Maui police have launched a criminal investigation into an arson attempt at Senate Majority Leader, J Kalani English’s East Maui home.

The incident was reported at 7:50 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2016 at the home located on Haneoʻo Road in Hāna, Maui.

It was the second suspicious fire reported at the home in recent months.  The first incident was reported on May 19, 2016.

Police and Fire personnel responding to the latest structure fire, were met by neighbors who related they had already extinguished the fire at the front of the residence underneath the floor.

A preliminary investigation determined that an unknown person utilized a small hand held propane torch to ignite the fire.

Police say the torch was found propped up underneath the residence and pointed towards the floor and support beam.

The damages to the structure were estimated at $2,500.

At the time of the incident, it was determined that resident owner was off-island.

Police say there are no suspects at the time and both incidents are currently under investigation.
