The State Department of Education has announced several school closures on the Island of Molokaʻi today due to water issues that we have learned this morning are related to the vandalism of the island’s water tanks at Hoʻolehua.
The following schools are closed today, Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2016:
Molokaʻi High
Molokaʻi Middle
Maunaloa Elementary
Kualapuʻu PCS
Representative Lynn DeCoite issued a statement today on the vandalism of Water Tanks in Hoʻolehua saying, “Getting word about vandalization to our water tanks and the possible contamination to our water system in Hoʻolehua – Molokaʻi- is deeply troubling. I ask all Hoʻolehua residents to please head the warning from DHHL and DO NOT DRINK THE WATER until we are assured it is safe.”
She continued saying, “Water is our most precious resource. This act of vandalism affects all of us doing the things we do in everyday life. It affects our families and disrupts our businesses- especially as we are all getting ready for the Thanksgiving holiday. Finding out what happened, getting a full report will hopefully help us make sure this does not happen in other communities across the state. I will keep in contact with DHHL and DOH to pass on the pertinent information to our communities.“
