Dear Mayor Arakawa:
Q: Last week, I was watching football with my friends and made breakfast for everyone. Unfortunately, in doing so I used up all the Spam and Vienna sausage that was stored in my emergency kit.
Hurricane season is over so I can wait till next year to resupply, right?
A: I’m sensing that you are a bachelor who doesn’t go to the supermarket too often.
In any case, I’m glad to hear that you have an existing emergency kit.
There’s nothing wrong with using the supplies in your kit as long as you resupply fairly soon.
And yes, you are correct about hurricane season being over; however, please note that Maui County is in our wet or winter season right now, and that flash floods are Hawai‘i’s most frequent type of emergency event.
In fact, this past Friday, the National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Watch advisory that was supposed to last until Sunday.
So please go to the supermarket soon so you can restock your emergency kit with seven days’ worth of replacement canned goods for your emergency kit.
And good luck with your football season. Hopefully, your team is doing better than my San Francisco 49ers this year.
