Seventeen year-old Cody Young of Makawao has advanced into the quarterfinals of the WSL World Junior Championship in Kiama, NSW, Australia. He took second place in his round four heat on Sunday with a heat total of 10.53. Cody will face Mateus Herdy of Brazil in the first heat of the Quarterfinals. The last time a surfer from Maui won the Junior Championship was in 2008 by Kai Barger.

Cody told the WSL, “I try and stay positive before a heat regardless of the conditions. Whether the waves are like they are today, or ten-foot and perfect, I try and keep the same attitude. I’m really happy to have made it.”
