CIRCUS INCOGNITUS Virtuoso Clown in a One-Man Comedy
Maui Arts & Cultural Center presents American clown and comic physical theatre performer Jamie Adkins in his one-man show Circus Incognitus for one performance in the Castle Theater, Saturday, Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
This engaging evening of clowning is suited for both the young and young at heart.
In Circus Incognitus, the star ‘clown’, Jamie Adkins, uses everyday objects such as a cardboard box, a chair, step-ladder and even fruit to create an on-stage playground of fun and frivolity, danger and suspense and outright laughter.
Audiences are presented with a charming “everyman” who just wants to please the audience in front of him and he more than successfully accomplishes that task.
The show starts out with the star entering a darkened stage with the elements of his new show all in a box. He notices his awaiting audience and the fun begins.
He immediately struggles to build the scene around him using everyday objects. Things go awry as his props prove most unhelpful: his ladder disintegrates under foot. He wrangles an animated chair, tussles with a pesky hat, negotiates a precarious slack wire and juggles almost everything.
Theatre-goers may even get involved in the action by tossing lemons for Jamie to catch on a fork…held between his teeth.
An expert at comedy born of desperation, Jamie’s performance is humble and unguarded. Adkins capably escorts the audience along his poetic journey with sidesplitting wit.
Tickets to Circus Incognitus are $35 plus applicable fees. MACC members receive a 10% discount and kids 12 and under are half price. Tickets available at the MACC Box Office, by phone at 242-SHOW or online at MauiArts.org.
